Week #017: Multiple Maximus

Due to some personal problems (I can't catch a break, can I?), we unfortunately had to delay the development of a few things, as you may have noticed in last thursday's update. While I'm not comfortable stating an ETA on anything, I can assure you that I'm prioritizing the completion of human males and shadow abilities (surprise?) for their addition to the game as soon as possible.

Many of you wanted to see Maximus geared up in various ways other than full plate armor, so I wanted to be sure to bring that to the blog this week. I've been pleased with the overall reception regarding the new Max so far, and I continue to assure you that if you had something different in mind, that we'll have you covered with the design of future races.

I also wanted to include some development shots of how Maximus' animations are coming along, but thanks to a major speed bump involving the side view, that stuff is a total mess right now and I don't think anyone could make any sense of it. I'll try to get something like that out next week. Unfortunately (I know, I know, this post is kind of a real drag...), that same speed bump will cause the completion of males to be pushed back by at least a week, and that isn't even including the equipment yet. Sorry! I'm doing what I can.

Enough of these downers, let's move on to some fun community impact activities. First of all, I'm sure some of you noticed that I extended the length of CIP#003 to determine the order of the remaining three elements (with shadow obviously being the second). Since I can't edit a poll once it's active, I couldn't modify it to reflect this extension. Just try not to let the title confuse you. Since shadow has already been decided on, feel free to change your votes to help decide on the next three if you wish.

As for our first Community Impact Opportunity (CIO), as I teased last week...

Community Impact Opportunity #001:
Choose Your Own Arsenal #001

What else can we expect to see by the end of the month, you ask? How about some new weapons? What I want to do is get your feedback on what kind of weapons you'd like to see included in HTD. Axes? Maces? Can't get enough of swords? Maybe you have some really wild and unique ideas in mind? As long as it fits the theme of the game, we want to hear it. Here are a few additional guidelines to follow:

  • Melee weapons are ideal for this opportunity. Since animations for ranged and casting weapons aren't yet complete, such weapons couldn't be added until a later date. I'll most likely hold a separate CIO when that time comes.
  • You do not need to have a visual of your idea. A detailed description is fine (and I cannot stress enough that more detail will increase your chances). Lack of a visual will not hurt your chances, unless your description is just too vague to make sense of.
  • While we can't include exact copies of a popular weapon (example: a Buster Sword, the Master Sword, etc.), we can create a reasonable facsimile. Feel free to include such suggestions and we'll see what we can do, but being imaginative and unique could go a long way.
  • A poll will not be opened to choose between these weapons. Any weapon that I choose to design will be included in the game!

As always, we're looking forward to seeing what you come up with. While I won't promise to include every idea, I will try to add as many as I can by the time the option of changing your weapons in-game becomes available (no public ETA, you know the drill).

In closing, the last thing I want to mention is I will be moving my weekly blog updates to sunday night. Getting them together for monday nights is just proving to be too difficult for me. This may change again if I find that sundays don't work any better for me, so stay tuned.

    1. Gon likes Kevin's post cause we knew what was there without even words ^^ (yes it was "#1? =P")

About Max looks cool, but you know what he misses below those poor guy lvl 0 pants don't you? XD Its white, has red hearts and isn't in game yet =P

About the weapons I did some "scratches" during my inorganic chemistry exam, can I enter my suggestion with that? (I'm asking without posting cause it involves scaning ans such and there's another mythological creature sleeping next to where the multitask printer is =P)

ps: damn asci confirmations etc etc etc lol
pps: was ment to be writen "Dedicated to The God King ;)" but it still is =P

  2. Terraria uses the name "Phasesaber" to avoid getting sued for their multicolored lightsabers. Could you maybe make a rainbow/color-shifting Phasesaber? I like the retro Mega-Maximus! :P

    1. I don't know if light sabers will fit in with the theme, at least not so early in the game. Maybe some epics later on? I'll check with Dan.

  3. I think you should have two melee class weapons, Blades and Blunts: My idea for a blade is the Chimera Blade, or a similar name, which has a chance of poisoning the monster when hit. It's not my own image, but something like this would be awesome: http://zombieninja690.deviantart.com/art/Chimera-s-Blade-255287069
All credit goes to the guy who drew this, you're awesome!
For the Blunt weapon, I'd like to suggest a weapon I like to call the Frenzy Mace! It's basically a flanged mace: If you add the head to the long end of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Two-section_staff.jpg
Except instead of a pommel or spike at the shorter end, it's got a flail! It's called the frenzy mace because although it's a fearsome weapon, you have to be in a 'Berzerker' mode to avoid taking a small amount of damage yourself?
If you like my ideas, then use them, but give credit to the guys who made these images, because they're awesome!!!!!

    1. As far as I know the only weapon classes HTD will have is melee, ranged and casting. It'll be very open otherwise.

I'll think on names for them if they reach the game ;)
    Tell me what you think.

    1. I miss having tests as an excuse to aimlessly doodle. Now I have aimlessly doodling as an excuse to do other things...

I like the second one, but I'm not entirely sure if they (that and the third) are supposed to be swords, daggers, or throwing knives even?

    2. That was during the exam lol so... the 2nd and 3rd were ment to be swords, but I did the "part-that-isn't-the-blade" bigger on the 2nd so it was visible (as you can see the draws were tiny =P) the 3rd was made just for the "back" of the blade plus the "curved spike" protecting the hand. The actual part of the blade has nothing into it.

Sorry for not having the accurate terms but specific names for sword parts I don't know in english lol

I could do some more and/or fix the proportions on those but I'm really short on time till Feb 3rd =S

    1. Let's add some gunblades while we're at it too. Actually gunblades could be cool since there's plenty of room to design those as we see fit and still be unique...

  10. I hope you add funny wepons like a fish or so on

  11. Are polearms okay? You could make it so that polearms do more damage but are slower to hit, and you can't carry anything in your second hand. (I'm not sure that you will implement a 'second hand' or not, but if not just ignore that last part).

    1. Polearms should be okay, but they might be two-handed weapons? I'm not really sure how we're handling 2H at the moment yet. Originally it was going to have it's own animation but now I'm questioning the importance of that.

  13. just some quick thoughts:

    - if we make weapons too cool now, later how will the weapons look? too big? too strange? I'd say keep it simple for now, no?

    - another thing is themes. That makes stuff really awesome. Imagine a zone/region/whatever full of skeletons and such, then makes a lot of sence that weapons are all bony and staffs with skulls and big bone clubs, etc. Or for instance on a rat invasion (muahaha ask Dan he know what I'm on about =P) there could be some shadow staffs with tiny rat skulls hanging, etc etc etc guess you see where I'm going.

    - if there is a theme for the beguining like "crappy wood weapons" would make our entries easier ;) (and yes I do like the rusty swords and training wood katanas =P)

    1. I'll probably hold back designs for later if I feel they're too epic for this early in the game. I won't just be gathering up all of the designs, redrawing them and calling it a day. I'll probably redesign them slightly too.

  14. just to ilustrate what I mean, this is my idea of cool well inserted weapons: http://api.ning.com/files/Bh0BcDkIhdG3XAx8TP1XB8yu4-q4KRdm--rM9Qk2SkTfYSchDo4BkjiARf2UGKPmEnTpd-NW7a1svCZ9zd5Lth8zKJWqxWv1/Anima__Bone_weapons_by_Wen_M.jpg~

Probably boos loot out of some feathered guy, or a raptor, or a fire elemental/dragonkind, some shocking lizard/fish etc ;)

  18. Does anyone have a clue when it comes to both free and legal video editing software? Concocting something tantalizing for next week's post...

All it really has to be capable of is reading MP4 (which seems like something they should all be capable of, but sure enough Windows Movie Maker is clueless) and time-lapse, although other features would be neat too.

  19. every game needs a crowbar (if there's zombies) a hamer, daggers, and actualy what I want to see in the game is a rapier. It's my favorite wepon after all :D

  20. I think an Arabian cutlass/scimitar would be cool. Or maybe a sword with a skull as the hilt/cross-guard and a sharpened bone as a blade.

  21. Here is one idea that I came up for, for a sword.

It is has a silver blade with a bright (almost glowing) green streak down the middle of it. It has a grey hilt and between the hilt and the blade there is a grey stone that has the appearence of a clock.

  22. How about adding scythes to the game?

Also, I was wondering if you could create a similar weapon to Altair's Sword, from Assassin's Creed 1, II, Brotherhood, and Revelations?

It's an awesome blade, have a look here:

  24. Nice stuff going on here guys and gals (well, I have no idea who reads this so I’ll stick with saying that)

I think (mainly about light, but fire is such an easy one to do that I also think about that, and then I also like nature etc.) that an awesome (I am a swordsman, I have no like for guns, spears etc.) sword would be a (classic) diamond hilted sword (any colour, but as I said I think of light allot I thought topaz or amber) in the shape of a sun for light, flame, ruby in the shape of a dragon? etc. and it could be a ninja type (forgotten how to spell the proper name) or a broadsword with what ever other extras you want. Maybe a serrated edge made of what ever stone you choose. Some basic tech in the game would be nice, like small voltage swords (or guns or whatever you want)

Also maybe, if you use 2Handed weapons, have small dagger like things, but 2 of them so you can have a kind of dash attack, speedy and a little damage :) I would have written more but I have to leave (lucky for you)

  25. Hey, I have a question, when you level up, will stats be distributed automatically (Example: Automatically gives you +1 in every stat) or will you be given a set amount of points you can use in whatever stat you want (Ex: The game gives me 3 points, so I put +2 in ATK and +1 in DEF)?
