Week #019: Choose Your Arsenal

My plans for this week's post got a little messy when I realized posting works-in-progress of Maximus was a little silly when he's already in the game.

Not really sure what else to do, since I was kind of loving the idea of taking the weekend off (or at least easy) after finishing all of that up, I figured the best idea was to show some progress on the new weapons from two weeks ago, since I kind of left that hanging afterwards to talk about Maximus instead.

Images represent a game currently under development.
Unfortunately, we had a lot more sword suggestions than we were hoping for, and since we agreed that we wanted to add other kinds of weapons to the game first, we had to be choosy about this batch. Many suggestions I made mental notes of for later (I realize there are many different kinds of swords, we just love being diverse), and some I just combined into one idea (but you can't see that one yet, hah!). Admittedly, I think the two-handed sword of my own design might have a bit of unintentional Buster Sword influence to it (and Max looks incredible dual-wielding them, FYI).

Something to always remember is that most work I show here, unless otherwise noted, should be taken as a work-in-progress of an incomplete idea. I say this mostly in regards to that mace which I'm not at all happy with yet. Kind of looks more like a street light than a mace...

Even though it was two weeks ago, it should be noted that we're always open to your suggestions and ideas when it comes to weapons, whether you have some basic ideas you'd like to see or some of your own designs you'd like to see in the game! Right now we're still looking for melee weapons, preferably not of the sword variety, for now.

  1. I would claim that I was Anonymous, but I don't like to lie :P
Kevin, your art is awesome, and Sam, your game makes it even more awesome because they actually do stuff in it. Can't wait to see more pretty stuff from Kevin, in awesome levels by Sam.
Keep up the great teamwork! Dan too, if he works on this game.

    1. Thanks for the words of support! Believe it or not every word of praise really is a bit more fuel to burn at the beginning of every work day...

While we all find ways to fit our ideas into the game, Dan is the lead designer and what he says goes in the end.

    2. Oh! Now I feel bad for assuming it was Sam who made this game, and glad I decided to tack Dan's name on the end since I wasn't sure.

Yay! Go Dan! Your game is awesome! Woohoo! :D

  2. I really like the axe, and i agree that the mace looks very much like an old-school streetlight. Maybe you can keep it under a name like "Border Beacon" (Reference to a very well known streetlight on a border :P)

  3. Lol and there I was thinking "well he must be looking for 1h-swords for its the thing with the attack animation already done!" XD

Well I don't really dislike the mace, dunno whats the ammount of variety weapons will have (like duzens, hundreds, OVER 9000!...) but if there's a lot of 'em I can't see why that one doesn't fit ;)

So you want 1 of each kind to make the animations firts and later do increase the variety of each kind is it? I'll give it to you some in a bit (maybe this time i'll get references instead of drawing =P)

    1. One-handed weapons are good (although we're going to skip a step and put two-handed in before the animation is ready, using one-handed as a placeholder) but they don't all necessarily have to be swords, is all.

  4. I'm the anonymous. Got lazy :P By the way, you could name that purple/pink blade the candy crusher and the axe the jagged juggernaut. Sounds a bit kiddy, but just sayin'

  5. How about a staff with hammerheads on each side that you use to bash whelps' heads in with (or other body parts)

  6. I don't think the mace is that bad. If it had color that wasn't basic light colors, red, orange, yellow, ect. it would be fine. I didn't even notice it looked like a street light until I read the post.

  7. Can you call the boss drop weapon dragon's shadow?

  9. Kevin, are you still taking sword suggestions? Cuz I got a good one. If the weapons are divided into elements, this would be a fire and shadow combo. It's got a blue handle, and as a blade it's spurting black and purple fire in the form of a blade. Hope you consider!

    1. We'll need more swords eventually of course, we're just trying to keep things varied and balanced. I always remember being in the end-game in World of Warcraft and being annoyed when they didn't add new weapons of the types I liked every patch. We don't want to leave anyone out.

  10. I'm not really sure of our stance on flavor/joke weapons yet. Maybe later on?

I made a new mace the other night and that'll probably be all for this next update since I have other things to tend to for now, but I'll be sure to keep these references on-hand for later.

    1. Meant to mention it somewhere but I guess I forgot: I don't think flails (or any weapon regarding some kinds of physics) will work without an exceptional amount of extra work. We could give it a try later on but there are too many other things to do right now to spend time on experimenting with those.

    2. yeah I thought so, its pretty hard to do them properly. Still there's a lot of other cool weapons to work on so =D
